U.M. Mohideen Memorial Day

A meeting to commemorate U.L.M. Mohideen, Former Member of
Parliament, Digamadulla will be held on Saturday at Al Marjam Ladies
College, Sammanthurai.
Sammanthurai Pensioners Welfare Social Service Committee has
organised the event. Dr. M.Y.M. Musthafa will preside.
Blood donation by SLRCS
Sri Lanka Red Cross Society volunteers in Trincomalee donated blood
to the Blood Bank of the Colombo National Hospital for patients brought
in by the ICRC in their evacuation program.
The branch organised the blood donation campaign last Saturday where
35 volunteers from the branch donated blood.
In addition, the branch has handed over mattresses and bed sheets to
the hospital where 60 volunteers are assisting the health staff in
handling patients.
Book launch
A book titled as Nazareyan Jesu Oru Kaaviya Nayagan Nazareyan (Jesus
an Epic Hero) a Tamil prose version of the New Testament authored by T.
Anton Selvakumar will be launched under the auspices of Henricians
Colombo, the OBA of Ilavalai St. Henry's College on Saturday at the
Parish Hall of St. Lawrence's Church, Wellawatte at 3.30 p.m.
The event will be presided over by the Senior Patron of the OBA C.P.E.
Gunasingham and Vicar General Diocese of Jaffna Very Revd. Dr. Justin
Gnanapragasam will be the Chief Guest.
Six arrested with gaja muthu

Acting on a tip-off, Dompe Police arrested six youth and seized the
vehicle they were traveling in when police detected gaja muthu in their
possession in Kapugoda.
The suspects, residents of Indolamulla, Homagama, Pitipana and
Ambalangoda were to be produced before the Pugoda Magistrate.
Hooch dens raided
Police stations in the Nikaweratiya Division seized 440 drams of
illicit brew and arrested five suspects during raids conducted on
illicit hooch dens in the area during the 24 hours ending 7 a.m. on
February 17, a Police Headquarters news release said.
Peradeniya Alumni AGM
The Annual General Meeting and the election of office bearers for
2009/2010, of the Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya,
Colombo Chapter will be held on February 22, Sunday at the Shalika Hall,
Park Road, Colombo 05 commencing at 9.30 a.m.
Emeritus Professor of English Ashley Halpe is due to grace this
occasion as the Chief Guest and Ranjith Samaranayake, Director Sampath
Bank will be the Guest of Honour.
AGM
The Old Boys Association of De Mazenod College, Kandana will hold the
Annual General Meeting on Sunday, March 1 at the College auditorium from
9.30 a.m. onwards to appoint the new Executive Committee for the
forthcoming year and thereafter hold old boys get-together.
Special meeting
A special meeting of the past cadets of Prince of Wales' College,
Moratuwa will be held on February 20 at 5.30 p.m. at the College main
hall.
Chemistry
graduateship program
Former Government Analyst and a distinguished Chartered Chemist, T.
Kandasamy will inaugurate the Graduateship Program in Chemistry for the
31st year on Saturday, February 21 at Adamantane House, 341/22, Kotte
Road, Welikada, Rajagiriya.
Anyone with three Advanced Level passes who is interested in
registering for this program should contact the above address
immediately since a few more places are available for late registrants.
Orientation sessions to provide more information will also be held at 3
p.m. on February 18 and 20.
Prize giving
The Annual prize giving of St. Joseph's College Colombo will be held
on February 27 (Friday) at the Sports Complex auditorium commencing at
1.30 p.m. The chief guest is Attorney General Mohan Pieries.
Lecture series
The monthly lecture of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka will be
held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24 at the Gamini Dissanayake
Auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre, No. 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha,
Colombo 07. The title of the lecture is "An Analysis of meat eating with
reference to the "Tripitaka" (Tripitakaye Dakvena Thrikoti Parishuddha
Mansaya) presented by Ven. Dr. Wilegoda Ariyadeva Thera. The lecture is
open to the public.
Badur Mowlood
The program of Badur Mowlood, Zikir and Thawba has been organised by
Al-Haj M.H.A. Haniffa, Chief Trustee of the Nawala Jummah Mosque. The
recital of Badur Mawlood will start on February 19 after Magrib prayers
and will continue until Isha prayers at the Nawala Jummah Mosque. Thawba
and Zikir Majlis will be conducted by Al-Haj Moulavi N.M. Imthiyas (noori)
after Isha prayers.
Prayers, lectures
The program will commence on Sunday, March 22. Rathibathul Jalaliya
will be recited by Moulavi A.B.M. Mubarak (falahi). It will start after
Magrib prayers and will continue till Isha prayers. A religious lecture
will also be conducted by Moulavi Al Haj M.T. Hilurhdeen (Falahi) after
Isha prayers.
Wap Magul in Batticaloa
The National Paddy Harvesting (Wap Magul) ceremony organised by the
Eastern Provincial Council will be held tomorrow at Karadiyanaaru,
Batticaloa.
Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa MP will be the chief
guest.

The death occurred of retired teacher Mrs. Nellie Godage, mother of
Daily News Features Editor Ruwan Godage.
Besides Ruwan she leaves her daughter Sriya Herath and son Asiri.
Remains are lying at the Mahinda Florist Funeral Parlour, Mt Lavinia.
Funeral takes place at the Mt. Lavinia Cemetery this afternoon.
Thihagoda correspondent’s father dies
B.M. Jayasena of Kapuduwa Thihagoda passed away.
He was the father of Lake House Thihagoda special correspondent Aruna
Kelum Bodhimana and the Assistant Divisional Secretary Gampola.
The funeral will take place at the family burial grounds today at 4
p.m.
