Lanka acts to get peace activist released

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama yesterday said the Ministry has instructed the Sri Lankan envoy based in Manila to take every possible effort to get the peace activist kidnapped by Al Qaida linked Abu Sayyaf militants released.

The Foreign Ministry and the Sri Lankan Mission in Manila have maintained constant dialogue with the Philippines Government and every possible action will be taken to ensure his release by the Sri Lankan Government.

Basilan Provincial Police Chief Salik Macapantar said on Sunday that an Abu Sayyaf faction took Omar Jaleel to the province's mountainous heartland called Sampinit Complex. He is a Sri Lankan peace activist attached to an Brussels based NGO.
