Independence Day celebrations proceeding in Italy

Proceedings of the 61st Independence Day celebrations held at the
Galle Face Green on February 4 will be available on wide screen for Sri
Lankans in Italy at Piyassaa Danthe in Napoli city on February 15 at
6.00 pm.
This has been organised by the SLFP branch of Napoli City. Sri Lankan
Ambassador for Italy Hemantha Warnakulasuriya will preside. |

hosted a function to mark the 61st Independence Anniversary
of Sri Lanka in Rome with the participation of Lankans of
all ethnic groups, bringing them under one Lion flag. Here

Graduateship program in Chemistry
The graduateship program in Chemistry at the level of a Special
Degree in Chemistry will be inaugurated for the 31st consecutive year on
February 21 at Adamantane House, Rajagiriya. Former Government Analyst
T. Kandasamy, Past President of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, will
be the Chief Guest.
A record number of applicants have already been registered for this
program which will commence at Kingswood College, Kandy and at the
Institute headquarters Rajagiriya. Three Advanced Level passes are

Annual Ambassador's Ball
The American Chamber of Commerce in Sri Lanka will host the 12th
Annual Ambassador's Ball on March 7 at the Hilton Colombo. The ball is
hosted annually to honour the US Ambassador in Sri Lanka.
Sales agents district conference
The conference for the district sales agents of the National
Lotteries Board was held on February 12, at 9.00 a.m. at Galadari Hotel,
Colombo. National Lotteries Board Chairman Chaminda Athuluwage presided.
Pulathisi Abimana
'Pulathisi Abimana 2009', a ceremony to mark the completion of 25
years in politics, Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services
Minister Maithripala Sirisena will be held on Sunday at 2.00 p.m. at
Thopa Wewa Maha Vidyalaya ground, Polonnaruwa.
Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka will preside.
Special felicitation awards on senior farmers, sportsmen and
educational aid to 350 samaneras will be presented at this ceremony.
Presentation on safety practices
A presentation on 'Safety in construction - the Australian approach
lessons to be learnt' will be made at the institution of Engineers, Sri
Lanka (IESL) by Australia based Sri Lankan Engineer Rohan Bandarage on
February 16 at 5.15 p.m. at the IESL Auditorium, 120/15, Wijerama
Mawatha Colombo 7.
Family education counselling
Family Education Counselling 2009, organised by the Rishshow Kosai
Bai Sri Lanka, Pepiliyana, Boralesgamuwa will be held at the Saffire
Hotel, Wellawatte tomorrow (14) and Kandy Art Residency, Katukele Road,
Peradeniya, Kandy on Sunday at 2.30 p.m.
Open University exams
Admission Test - Diploma in English/Advanced Certificate in English
and CA Test - Basic Principles of Chemistry (CHU 1221) - Level 3 of the
Open University of Sri Lanka will be held tomorrow.
Repeat examinations will be held on a date to be announced later for
students in the Central and North Western Province unable to sit for the
examinations due to the Provincial Council Elections.
Ashirvada Pooja
An Ashirvada Pooja organised by the Old Pupils (Junior) Association
of Sri Dharmaloka Vidyalaya, Kelaniya to invoke blessings of the
Security Forces, Police and the public will be held at the Kelaniya Raja
Maha Viharaya tomorrow at 5.00 p.m.
New Chairman Consumer Affairs Council

Trade , Marketing Development, Cooperatives and Consumer Services
Minister Bandula Gunawardena has appointed Senior Attorney-at-Law Upali
Senaratne as the Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Council with effect
from yesterday.
Prof. P. Wilson and Mr. Dilum de Abrew were appointed as members of
the Council in terms of Section 39 (2) of the Consumer Authority Act,
No. 9 of 2003.
He was a chairman of the Land Reform Commission.
Kidney patient seeks help
Renal Specialist Dr. D. T. D. J. Abeysekara has recommended a kidney
transplant and haemo-dialysis (a system of purifying blood using a
machine) for W. M. Surekha Sandamalee (24) of Negampaha, Siyambalewa,
Tammanagama.
Rs. 300,000 is needed to cover the expenses of this process.
Since Surekha comes from a very poor farmer family depending on
harvests from the land allotted to her parents by Mahaweli. They cannot
afford to foot this bill.
Surekha requests assistance from donors and donor organisations to
help save her life. All donations may be sent to W. M. Surekha
Sandamalee Wijesinghe, Tammennagama, Siyambalewa, Negampaha. Her bank
account number is Bank of Ceylon, Galnewa 1-023739-2.
Airman killed in brawl
An airman was shot dead and his brother sustained injuries when a
group of men shot them yesterday in Mawarala.
Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said following a brawl with a
group of gangsters, an Airman was shot dead near Mawarala school around
1.30 a.m.
N. Tharanga Dahanayake (27), attached to Batticaloa Air Force camp
was shot dead and his brother Sunil Dahanayake who sustained injuries
had been admitted to Matara hospital.
“Initial investigations revealed that the incident had occurred over
a vehicle dispute,” SSP Gunasekera told the Daily News.

The 11th Annual General Meeting of the “Sarasavi Mithuro’ of the
Colombo University will be held on Saturday at 10.30 a.m. at the
students’ centre at the University premises.
Death sentence for murder accused
SANDASEN MARASINGHE
Colombo High Court Judge Deepali Wijesundara yesterday sentenced two
persons to death following conviction for committing a murder.
The Court convicted P. Don Nilanka and K. Pradeep Shantha alias
Fredie for murdering A. Dimuthu Dilrukshana Silva on July 1, 1998.
Dimuthu was killed at Dehigahapitiya. According to the evidence the two
convicts had assaulted the victim with a club and stabbed him to death
with a knife.
According to the statements made to the police the duo had killed the
victim as a result of a previous grudge. The Court observed the case was
proved beyond reasonable doubt. State Counsel Sudharshana de Silva
appeared for the prosecution.
Special British envoy for Lanka
Britain named a special envoy to Sri Lanka yesterday.
“I’ve asked Des Browne, our former Defence Secretary, to be an envoy
for Sri Lanka,” Prime Minister Gordon Brown told a Parliamentary
Committee.
