The CyberKnife was unveiled at the Apollo Speciality Cancer Hospital
at Chennai, recently by Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, Executive Chairman, Apollo
Hospitals Group.
As he unveiled the CyberKnife Robotic Radio Surgery System, Executive
Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group Dr. Prathap C Reddy, said, “The
incidence of cancer has been on the rise. Prevention and preventive
checks utilizing advanced diagnostics needs to be every person’s agenda
to curb this surge.
“The Apollo Speciality Cancer Hospital is one of the few hospitals in
India equipped to provide 360-degree cancer care.
In our continuing endeavor to fight cancer, we have brought the most
advanced CyberKnife in Asia Pacific. It is the world’s first and only
robotic radiosurgery system designed to treat tumors anywhere in the
body with sub-millimeter accuracy. Undoubtedly the next frontier in
cancer treatment.”
Dr. Reddy said that India is today a global hub for world-class
healthcare; “and we will be adding another highlight with the launch of
the CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System in the country,” he said.
The close ties between India and Sri Lanka as well as their proximity
to each other will enable Sri Lankans suffering from cancer to avail
themselves of the latest cancer detection technology, literally a
stone’s throw away from their homes at half the cost they would incur
had they had to travel to the west for similar treatment.
“Currently many Sri Lankans travel to India for medical attention and
the availability of the CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System in
Chennai will be a boon for not just Indians but Sri Lankans, as well as
others suffering from cancer in the region”, said Dr. Reddy.

Golden Key Eye and ENT hospital makes progress
One-and-a-half years after it commenced operations, the Golden Key

the Golden Key Eye and ENT hospital. |
In 2008 alone, the hospital had performed more than 2,800 cataract
surgeries, establishing itself as a significant constituent of the
country’s medical infrastructure and a centre of excellence for eye and
ENT related investigations, treatment and surgery.
“The equipment and facilities at this institution alone make it
unique”, said Managing Director and Chief Consultant Eye Surgeon at the
hospital Dr. Saliya Pathirana. “It is the only private facility in Sri
Lanka where all eye-related investigations including optical coherence
tomography (OCT) as well as treatment can be done under one roof.”
He said tests such as fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA), A and B
scans, as well as laser treatment and phacoemulsification surgery for
cataracts are done routinely at the hospital, making it the most
advanced facility of its kind in the country.
“This is also the only private medical facility in Sri Lanka to offer
vitreoretinal surgery for problems such as retinal detachment and
intraocular infection,” Dr. Pathirana said.
The hospital runs several full-time specialty clinics for conditions
such as Glaucoma, Squints and Ocular plastics and is the only specialty
hospital that is open 24 hours a day, he said. |
