“We believe that as a large corporate in Sri Lanka, it is our duty to offer these exciting experiences to the Sri Lankan community,” he said.

“We are re-launching this program with diversified products to attract a cross section of the society,” he said.

This includes heritage, wild life safaris and also whale watching tours. “We are looking at a guided tour to Trincomalee in the future,” he said.

“Our escorted tours covering the Cultural Triangle, Yala and Kataragama cater to senior citizens at discounted rates during week days and the families and working community over the weekends. The service we offer will be on par with the high quality that we deliver to our overseas visitors through 40 years of excellence at Walkers Tours,” he said.

The tours will commence from Colombo and air-conditioned transport, star class accommodation and a professional guide would be provided for each tour. “If an individual was going on his or her own for one of these package tours it would cost 95 percent more,” said Executive Vice President, Sector Head, Leisure (inbound) John Keells Holdings, Vasantha Leelanada.

“Over 40 percent of the hotel guests were locals,” he said.

Director General Sri Lanka Tourism, Dilip Mudadeniya said that domestic tourism is a very important key player in the leisure sector. “Last year nearly 10 percent of the tourism market was from the domestic sector,” he said.
