Facelift for agro-based business in East
A project aimed at promoting agro-based micro and small scale
enterprises in the Eastern Province to uplift the livelihood of people
in the area, has received Japanese aid.
UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organisation) under the
integrated industrial development program in Sri Lanka in partnership
with the Batticaloa District Chamber of Commerce and Industry and
Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Trincomalee District has embarked
on the project with donor funds from the Japanese Government to the
value of US$ 1.732 million.
The objective is to assist around 300 households in rural communities
in these two districts to revitalise agricultural activities by
providing agricultural machinery and tools to increase their
productivity.
UNIDO has provided agricultural equipment and tools worth over Rs. 20
million to villagers of Batticaloa and Trincomalee districts. It also
has provided training for farmers on the use of the equipment through
the suppliers of machinery.
UNIDO has provided two vehicles with funds from Japan worth Rs. 2.9
million to project offices in Batticaloa and Trincomalee so that project
staff could visit the beneficiaries in the area to monitor and guide the
activities. The Industry Ministry paid customs duty and other levies in
clearing the vehicles.
