Unusual weather hits green tea leaf production

Unusual weather conditions has resulted in a marked decrease in the production of green tea leaf in the Medhamahanuwara, Hunnasgiriya Rangala and Loolwatte areas in the Kandy district.

Very little or no rain has fallen in these areas for the past two months making things worse in the extremely chilly conditions.

A senior planter said the intake of tea crop is poor under such unusual weather conditions.

Meanwhile, there has been a marked improvement in the prices of tea fetched by estates in the Kandy region (Western Medium) at the January 28 sale.
