61st Independence Day

Plea for peace

The Paradise Isle has completed
61 years services to nation
It is with pride that the Lankans
celebrate the occasion.

Independence for which our leaders
fought with pleasure
is the greatest gift, we preserve
as a treasure.

She earned a reputation as
an island of stability
Due to the dedication of the
rulers to make it a reality.

Since liberation Sri Lanka grew
from strength to strength
Due to the heroic hard work
performed at length.

It is our duty to reflect back and remember
The heroes who struggled with
no harsh temper.

Enthusiasm displayed was
a distinguishing feature
Well matched with performance
of exceptional nature.

Galaxy of great men in the struggle,
who took part
Did their very best before they did depart.

This event celebrated as
one family - our bond
is a bond that continued to
blossom like a lotus in a pond.

With freedom in the wake
of this speedy change
Dedication was the key word
of the youth of every range.

Petty differences and party politics
should not hamper
the good intentions achieved for
a tomorrow better.

Alas, our motherland with
a precious heritage
fell a victim to a deadly war
to our disadvantage.

Independence had made
a contribution significant
But hatred and disunity made
the war imminent.

With war, the dawn of a new era,
full of hope
is shattered, leaving for unity
hardly any scope.

Not only does it affect Lankan sovereignty
But also brings disaster to peace
and prosperity.

The fight for Independence
was due to unity is no secret
But today the way same participants
do regret.

In the north conflict, terror
and disharmony prevail
Humble plea for peace is of no avail.

We owe an inestimable debt
to our armed forces
Like for others, life for them
is not a bed of roses.
