Royal in commanding position

Royal College were well set to pull off another outright victory after dominating the opening day's play in their inter-school under 19 cricket tournament match against Dharmaraja College, Kandywhich began at Reid Avenue yesterday.

After piling up a formidable 255 runs in their first innings Royal College put up a superb performance on the field to skittle out the Rajans for a paltry 64 runs during the final session.

Royal: 255 (S. Hettiarachchi 52, K. Perera 28, K. Vithanage 86, P. Silva 6 for 80, R. Bandara 2 for 53, R. Ekanayake 2 for 62).

Dharmaraja: 64 (D. Ekanayake 31, Y. Abeykoon 2 for 24, L. Randevela 3 for 18, R. Rambukwella 2 for 4, M. Thanthirigoda 2 for 10).

Peterites in strong position

Opener Andy Berenger hit a solid half century as St. Peter's College reached 143 for 3 in reply to Maris Stella's first innings total of 166 runs on the opening day of their inter school under 19 cricket tournament match which commenced at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

Maris Stella: 166 (A. Jayasinghe 48, S. de Silva 43, C. Peiris 5 for 30, N. Perera 3 for 37).

St. Peter's: 143 for 3 (A. Berenger 57, D. Perera 23, S. Ranasuriya 32, I. Peiris 28 n.o, V. Dassanayake 3 for 42).

Shameera leads Joes recovery

Skipper Shameera Weerasinghe hit a splendid 106 with one six and 14 boundaries as St. Joseph's College recovered from 84 for 5 to reach an impressive 248 runs in their first innings on the opening day of their 105th annual inter school cricket encounter against S. Thomas College worked off at Darley Road yesterday.

St. Joseph's: 248 (S. Weerasinghe 106, R. Tatil 39, H. Silva 26, J. Jayasinghe 25, C. Fonseka 4 for 84, R. de Silva 2 for 40, A. Kerner 3 for 22)

S. Thomas: 29 for 2.
