Lasantha assassination:

Suspect arrested

A suspect was arrested in connection with the assassination of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickramatunge in Kawudana, Dehiwela yesteday evening.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said the suspect was arrested around 5.00pm. “Police also seized a mobile phone from the suspect which belonged to Wickramatunga . He also had in his possession a telephone book containing numbers of Wickramatunga and several others,” he added.

The suspect, a trishaw driver was also involved in many criminal activities in the area. “The suspect is believed to have grabbed Wickramatunga’s phone and fled from the scene after assassinating him. Following interrogation, he had divulged information of another suspect involved in the assassination,” SSP Gunasekera told the Daily News.

Wickramatunga was killed at the Bakery junction, Attidiya on January 08 while driving to his office.

Four police teams were deployed to conduct investigations. RJ
