Unity Government still best solution for Zimbabwe
S.AFRICA: A unity government was still the best solution for
Zimbabwe, Morgan Tsvangirai said yesterday, four months after signing a
power-sharing deal that remains in limbo.
“A political agreement remains the best means of preventing Zimbabwe
from becoming a failed state,” Tsvangirai told journalists in
Johannesburg.
Tsvangirai said he was still committed to the unity deal signed with
Robert Mugabe, but added “we need to transfer power from ZANU-PF
officials, who will not solve the problems, to MDC officials.”
Mugabe and Tsvangirai signed a power-sharing deal on September 15,
after disputed elections last year, but the deal has hit the rocks over
disputes about who will control the most powerful ministries.
Amid the political wrangling, Zimbabwe faces massive humanitarian
challenges with cholera the latest disaster alongside hyper-inflation,
chronic shortages of food, and a collapsed infrastructure and social
services.
Zimbabwe’s cholera outbreak had killed more than 2,100 people on
Wednesday.
The latest figures from the World Health Organization show that the
death toll in Zimbabwe has now reached 2,106 since August while 1,642
new cases were added on in a single day.
The total number of people infected has surged past 40,000.
