Now salmon ‘bombs’

A major disaster was averted when police detected 11 tins of Salmon packed with detonators inside a household in the Chilaw area before it exploded, Police Media Spokesman, SSP Ranjith Gunesekera told the Daily News.

The salmon tins were picked up by a man who spotted them lying on the Chilaw beach three weeks ago. He later took them away and kept it at his home not knowing its contents.

According to SSP Gunesekera the detonators had been smuggled by terrorists to detonate large bombs elsewhere. The detonators were discovered accidentally when children in the household playing with a salmon tin sustained injures when a tin exploded suddenly. Chilaw police are investigating to ascertain the destination of the salmon tins and who smuggled them to the beach.
