IDPs receive surprise visitor on Thai pongol day
Inmates of the Nelukkluam and Menik Farm camps in Vavuniya, housing
the internally displaced, had a welcome surprise on Thai Pongol Day when
Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Minister Risad Badhiutheen
visited them and brought them good wishes and greetings from President
Mahinda Rajapaksa together with loads of festive goodies.

The goodies included new clothes for the festival which he
distributed among the 550 odd families numbering 1,350 persons.
Minister Badhiutheen who also heads the Wanni District Development
team was accompanied by Northern Governor Dickson Dela.
The Minister moved with the people who had fled LTTE atrocities
discussed their needs and offering solutions.
Among those in the temporary shelters of the two camps were several
Government teachers and students of the Jaffna University. The Minister
asked the teachers to assist the children by holding makeshift classes
at these centres.
He also made arrangements for the students to attend lectures at the
Jaffna University with the Ministry to bear all expenses.
He said assistance and facilities will be provided to those fleeing
the LTTE and arrive in Government controlled areas.
Arrangements were made to earmark a 150 acre land area to accommodate
some 6,000 families expected to pour into Government controlled areas in
the coming days.
Arrangements were also made to issue special ID cards to inmates of
the two camps. |
