West African bloc suspends Guinea after coup
WEST APRICA: The west African regional bloc ECOWAS said Saturday it
had suspended Guinea after the military coup there last month and called
for elections before the end of the year.
Heads of state and government from the Economic Community of West
African States (ECOWAS), meeting in the Nigerian capital, followed the
recommendation of their foreign ministers in barring Guinea.
The leaders “strongly condemned the coup d’etat of December 23” for
breach of its democratic protocols and “suspended Guinea from all
meetings of ECOWAS at heads of state and ministerial levels, until
constitutional order is restored,” said ECOWAS commission chair Mohamed
Ibn Chambas.
