It was a combined effort by the 57 Division under the command of Major General Jagath Dias and the 58 Division under the command of Brigadier Shavendra Silva that ousted the LTTE from its most prestigious stronghold and their de-facto capital Kilinochchi on January 2. Symbolising their team spirit, the two Division Commanders along with their Brigade Commanders and Battalion Commanders posed for a group photo in the centre of Kilinochchi to mark the historic victory. Among those in the picture are Colonel Aruna Wanniarachchi, Deputy GOC of the 57 Division, 58 Division Brigade Commanders, Colonel Suraj Banshajaya (583 Brigade), Lt. Colonel. Elephant Pass next target

The Security Forces who captured two key Tiger strongholds Paranthan and Kilinochchi within 24 hours are poised to capture strategic Elephant Pass, the isthmus that connects the Jaffna peninsula to the mainland, as 58 Division troops are only two and half kilometres short of their target by yesterday afternoon, Military sources told the Daily News yesterday.

Forces capture Oddusudan

The Security Forces attached to Task Force IV operating in the East of the A-9 road yesterday captured another key junction town Oddusudan on the Mankulam - Mullaitivu A-34 road completely taking full control of the Oddusudan - Nedunkerni - Puliyankulam road, Military sources told the Daily News.
