The shortage of English teachers in the Uva Province is a handicap
for students to carry on their education properly. In order to overcome
this defect the Uva Provincial Council and I have drawn up a plan to
enlighten the English skills of the graduate teachers in Uva, said the
Governor, Uva Province, Nanda Mathew.
He was speaking at a discussion about the English Education in Uva
Province organised by the Uva PC and the Governor's Office, Badulla held
at the Management Training Centre at Pelgahatenne.
The Governor said the majority of English teachers in the Uva who
live in other parts of the country are always trying to get transfers to
their hometowns.
Due to this reason there are no English teachers at some of the
schools in the Badulla and Moneragala districts." He said our English
training program is scheduled to be phased over a very short period.
Initially a number of English Instructors will be trained in English
Language by the Senior English Instructors of the British Council.
The Governor said the Trained Instructors of Uva will then train the
graduates of Uva in English language. This will be a satisfactory
solution to the shortage of English teachers. I thank the British
Council for supporting for this programme.
The British Council's Teaching Manageress and Senior Technical
Instructress Leece Everns, Lecturer British Council Semans Herkin,
Deputy Chief Secretary Uva Province G.A.M.S.P. Ambanwala, Assistant DE
of English Uva Provincial Education Department and several others
participated.
