Books for 7,000 children of Police personnel

The public and family members of senior and junior police personnel
paid tribute to members of the Police Seva Vanitha Unit and the Police
Families Welfare Association led by Ms.
Anoma Goonetileke Wickremaratne, for the effort taken by the Unit in
organising a massive project of distributing school books, gifts and
cash totalling over Rs. Four million among the 7,000 children of Police
Sergeants, Police Constables and Police Drivers at a ceremony held at
the Bambalapitiya police grounds on Saturday.
Chief Guest First Lady Shirahti Rajapaksa, Guest of Honour Kusum
Wickramanayaka and IGP Jayantha Wickremaratne participated.
The Police Cultural Troupe and Police Band were in attendance.
Jack, Tani, Sandy and Romiya of the Police Kennels Division
entertained those present.
Anoma Goonetaileke Wickremaratne said that they have commenced a
number of welfare projects for the benefit of the Police personnel and
the Public. The Police Seva Vanitha Unit will also provide books to
school libraries.
She said that there are over 7000 children whose requests had not
been received on time and promised to provide these children with books
and other requirements in the next programme in April 2009.
Former IGP Chandra Fernando's wife Ms. Nandani Fernando, former IGP
Cyril Herath's wife Rani Herath, Senior DIGs Mahinda Balasuriya, D. W.
Prathapasinghe, Nimal Mediwaka, S. K. Shanker, Nimal Lewke, Kingsley
Ekanayake and Field Force Headquarters Commander Senior SP Lalith
Lekamge also participated.
