The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) is to enter a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) to get the assistance of an American Company to
formulate a sustainable solutions to the garbage disposal problem,
Municipal Commissioner Badrani Jayawardane told the Daily News
yesterday.
The company will open an alternative electrical power generation
project near Madampitiya for its total power requirement linked to the
American Hospital project expected to be constructed at Peliyagoda,
Jayawardane added.
Garbage Piling has posed a serious problem to the city dwellers and
those living around the Bloemendhal area are badly affected.
Jayawardane said the CMC had to look for alternative strategies to
dispose garbage in the Colombo city. "Therefore a decision has been made
by the CMC to dump the garbage at the Boralesgamuwa, Karadi-yana Golden
Sun Rise garbages site," she said.
Dumping of solid waste at Karadiyana site was also suspended by a
court order, as the site was reserved for garbage from Dehiwala,
Boralesgamuwa and Kalubowila localities. But the CMC was able to seek
relief till January 16, after submitting facts to the court.
Meanwhile, the CMC invited tenders from waste disposal agents and the
quotations will be opened on December 23. |
