Squashing rumours:

UNP(D) Group to support Govt during Budget vote

Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene said yesterday that the UNP(D) Group had unanimously adopted a proposal put forward by its leader, Minister Karu Jayasuriya to extend their fullest support to the Government during the crucial Budget vote as well as the Government's future endeavours.

The Minister said although the UNP(D) was fully supportive of the Government endeavours as one of its partners, the above resolution had been adopted to squash rumours spread by interested parties. In recent times various media reports had surfaced quoting UNP sources that the defectors were holding talks in view of a possible re-union and also there were differences of opinion within the party with regards to their support for the Government.

The Minister said the UNP(D) Group had resorted to the above action to clear the air with regards to these rumours.
