Asian Junior Wheelchair Tennis training camp at SLTA
The Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) will write a piece on
Wheelchair Tennis history when it hosts the country's second Asian
Junior Wheel Chair Tennis Training Camp from 6-8 Dec 2008 from 9 am to 4
pm at SLTA hard courts sponsored by the ITF/Cruyff Foundation.
It is another of ITF's endeavors to spread wheelchair tennis
worldwide. The event will be financed by the sponsorship of Cruyff
foundation through ITF. Training will be conducted by three Local
coaches and expect several regional Juniors and coaches to participate.
SLTA invites all disabled Children under 18 whose arms are in good
order to play.
All tennis equipment & all other essentials including meals will be
provided to all junior participants. As a result of this programme last
year two of Sri Lankan Juniors got the opportunity to travel to
Netherlands and Australia to undergo training.
The bulk of the island's wheelchair participants are servicemen who
were rendered disabled on the battle front.
Their successes on the tennis court, however, were commendable - and
inspired the SLTA to take the sport to the civilian population,
especially children.
The Cruyff Foundation training camp is thus seen as a welcome shot in
the arm for youth development.
"Wheelchair tennis has made vast strides in a relatively short period
of time - and the ITF's decision to stage this significant international
event in Sri Lanka is obviously an acknowledgement of the successful
programs we've carried out,'' "The 2nd Asian Junior Camp will no doubt
help take the sport to another level.''
If any disabled children wishes to attend this training camp are
kindly requested to contact General Manager -SLTA 5337161 or to be
present on these days from 9 am to 4 pm at SLTA.
