Several parties boycott Karunanidhi’s meeting
Jayalalitha |
CHENNAI: Most parties in Tamil Nadu boycotted a meeting called by
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to discuss the situation in Sri Lanka.
Representatives from principal opposition AIADMK, its ally MDMK, BJP,
CPI, CPI-M and DMDK will be part of the delegation as they boycotted the
meeting, saying it was “unnecessary”.
AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa termed the meeting of the
legislature parties as totally unnecessary and the party would boycott
it. In a statement, the AIADMK chief said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi
should register his protest to the Central Government for failing to
find a solution to the Lankan Tamils issue by stepping down as Chief
Minister.
Jayalalithaa recalled that she had correctly guessed the mindset of
Karunanidhi when the resolution for resignation of MPs was adopted at
the all-party meeting on October 14 and the drama came to an end after
External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee met Karunanidhi. Karunanidhi
will lead an all-party delegation to Delhi on December 4 to meet Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh.
The decision was taken at a meeting of leaders of legislative parties
at the Secretariat, convened by the Chief Minister.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, which was attended by
leaders of DMK, Congress, and PMK, Karunanidhi ruled out withdrawal of
support to the UPA government at the Centre over the issue, saying it is
not necessary at this juncture.
