Sri Lanka ruggerite Imran Bisthamin seriously injured
Sri Lanka and Kandy Sports Club crack No. 8 Imran Bisthamin had a
fall from a concrete slab and sustained serious head and spinal injuries
on Saturday close to midnight in Kandy.
He was rushed to Kandy General Hospital where an emergency operation
lasting over five hours was performed to save his life. He is now lying
in the Intensive Care Unit.
It must be recalled that Imran Bisthamin first played for St.
Anthony's College, Kandy as a forward, captaining his school in his
Later he turned out for the champion Kandy Sports Club as a flanker
and played a major role in the club winning many championship titles for
the last three years. He also played for the Sri Lanka youth team.
He was a hard working third row forward and a good carrier of the
ball in addition to his aggressive play. He also excelled in the line
outs using his height and build to the maximum.
His dropping from the Sri Lanka side added to the controversy which
hit Sri Lanka's rugby, as many felt he should have been in the Sri Lanka
purely on his excellent performance for Kandy SC this year.
He is now lying in a critical condition in Kandy hospital.
His fall is alleged to have taken place at the Torrington Shopping
Complex, Dalada Veediya, Kandy and his head had struck the ground floor
which was all cement and hard.
