Eastern Province CM’s Personal Secretary, driver gunned down

COLOMBO: The Personal Secretary to the Eastern Province Chief Minister and his driver were assassinated by unknown gunmen yesterday morning in Oruwela, Athurugiriya.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan’s Co-ordinating Secretary Kumara-swamy Nandagopan alias Ragu and his driver S.T.M. Nazeer were gunned down in Oruwela around 11.25 a.m.

“The incident took place along the Kaduwela-Athurugiriya road close to Millennium City,” he added. The Volvo bearing number EP KH-3685 was blocked and forced to the side of the road before it was attacked. Both side of the roads were thick jungle. Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan and UPFA MP M. L. A. M. Hisbullah visited the scene.

The victims were shot in the neck and chest from the driver’s side at point blank range. Nandagopan had contested at the Eastern Provincial election as the main TMVP candidate for the Trincomalee district. Athurugiriya Police are conducting investigations.

Meanwhile, two other TMVP members were shot dead at their TMVP office in Pangudaweli, Batticaloa on Thursday night, SSP Gunasekera said.

Two more TMVP cadres were shot dead at Pankudaweli in Batticaloa on Thursday night.

The victims have been identified as A. Arumugam and S. Gunasekaran. The TMVP cadres were shot dead by suspected LTTE gunmen near their camp in Pankudaweli. Around seven LTTE cadres carried out the attack and fled the area.
