A Police route patrol recovered a hand grenade near the old Welikada police station last morning.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said the police team on a route clearing operation had observed a suspicious parcel along the Welikada main road at around 6.30 a.m. and alerted the emergency unit. "A hand grenade was found inside the parcel and was later defused", he added.
