President-elect Nasheed to be inaugurated today

MALDIVES: President-elect Mohamed Nasheed will be inaugurated today at a special ceremony at Dharubaaruge.

The ceremony will be attended by several South Asian leaders and many foreign dignitaries. Nasheed’s inauguration will mark the beginning a new era of democracy in the island republic after the ratification of the new Constitution and far reaching reforms embraced by the country.

In today’s inauguration of the new President the Chief Justice would administer the oath on President Nasheed and Vice President Waheed.

This is the first time the Maldives has elected a President and Vice President in a multi-party election.

The new President will address the nation after taking the oath of office. The new President will be accorded a 21 gun salute after taking oath of the office of the President. Nasheed is 41 and Gayoom was also 41 when he first took office on November 11. Nasheed is the fourth President of the Maldives. Miadhu
