The first phase of the concreting of the Maralanda-Ahasyanapitiya
road was completed and the newly-concreted road was vested it in the
people by SLFP Chief Organiser, Health, Indigenous Medicine, Youth
Affairs and Sports Minister of North Western Province Neranjan
Wickremasinghe last Sunday.
This road was constructed by the Mawathagama Pradeshiya Sabha under
the Jathika Saviya-Gama Neguma programme with a shramadana organised by
the people in the Maralanda Grama Niladhari Division.
Chairman of the Mawathagama Pradeshiya Sabha Sanath Meegolla said
that 209 such programmes are being conducted in 71 Grama Niladhari
Divisions in the Mawathagama Pradeshiya Sabha but this is the first
village which finished the work within a short period without any
complaints.
Meegolla said the Government’s Jathika Saviya-Gama Neguma programme
granted Rs. 247,000 for the first phase of this road construction which
could have covered 184 feet but the dedication of the people of this
village extended it beyond our expectations covering a distance of 260
feet.
“It’s a great pleasure to me to have motivated the grant of more
funds to expedite further construction work of this road,” he said.
SLFP Chief Organiser for the Mawathagama electorate and Minister of
Health, Indigenous Medicine, Youth Affairs and Sports, North Western
Provincial Council, Neranjan Wickremasinghe said: “I was very happy
after inspecting the road construction done by the villagers under the
guidance of the Grama Niladhari of Maralanda and I hope to grant Rs. one
million to extend this road and finish the construction in future.”
Pradeshiya Sabha Member S. Illankoon, Mawathagama Divisional
Secretary, Grama Niladhari Maralanda Division, OIC, Mawathagama Police,
