The exhibition of prints, engravings (mostly copies), books and
photographs, from the 17th - 19th century attempts to encapsulate the
visual response of artists, photographers and writers of German origin
to Sri Lanka’s rich heritage, fauna, flora and peoples.
The exhibition is organised by Sri Lanka architect, Mr. Ismeth Raheem
including the presentation of images; designing of the catalogue and
writing the text under the patronage of the Goethe-Institut, Sri Lanka.
For the very first time such kind of an attempt has been made and it
will certainly show the overwhelming extra ordinary interest of
Intellectuals and Artists captivated by the nature and expatriate from
this tropical island. This interest remains unabated also after the
period chosen for this Exhibition and references up to 1900 as we know
of great scholars coming in the foot prints of Wilhelm Geiger for their
studies.
However, in the 20th century the interest becomes increasingly
bilateral, as out of German Sri Lankan encounters resulted also the
foundation of the 1stTheravada Buddhism House, in Berlin, Germany.
Official opening of the Exhibition on Friday, 31st October 2008, at
6.00 p.m. at the German Cultural Centre, 39, Gregorys Road, Colombo 7.
