Floods affect 13,000 families

Due to the prevailing rainy weather nearly 13,000 families numbering
43,000 persons from Kalutara, Puttalam, Galle, Matara, Gampaha and
Matara Districts have been affected, Director General of Disaster
Management Centre Gamini Hettiarachchi said yesterday.
He said that while one death was reported 42 houses were partly
damaged and four houses fully damaged. Nearly 1,000 families numbering
4278 persons have been housed in welfare camps. Some are staying with
their relatives. Water levels in flooded areas are decreasing rapidly
and no sooner the situation come back to normal they too will be able to
return to their residences.
Addressing the media Acting Disaster Management Minister and Urban
Development Minister Rohana Kumara Dissanayake said that the relevant
District Secretaries have been instructed to take immediate relief
measures and precautionary moves to protect the people from being
affected. They have also been allocated enough funds.
Addressing the media National Building Research Organisation Chairman
R.M.D.K. Bandara said that minor landslides have been reported from
certain areas of the affected districts.
Mapping of areas frequently subjected to landslides and floods have
been commenced. Ten Districts have been identified as landslide and
flood threat prevailing areas.
