TU action cripples textbooks printing - Ministry

COLOMBO: the school textbooks printing process has been affected by Trade Union action launched by certain trade unions of the Government Press, Education Ministry sources said.

As a result the Government

Press would most probably not be able to complete the printing process by the scheduled time.

The Education Ministry hands over printing of school books to several printing institutions including the Government Press.

Moves are under way to revise the printing order granted to the Government Press. Accordingly orders to print textbooks titles will be handed over to other printing institutions, the sources said.

If this situation prevails long the Government Press will not be assigned to print textbooks for the next year. However, more than 65 per cent of school textbooks have been printed.

These textbooks are being distributed among schools. The Ministry has planned to complete the distribution process by December 4.
