“My Dreams Are Roses...”
Author: Sudath Jayatissa Hewamadduma
“My dreams are Roses” is an anthology of poetry and short stories
written by Sudath Jayatissa Hewamadduma, with a difference. He was a
teacher of English and assistant principal of Rahula College Matara, Who
was found to be versatile in his creative writing.
The special feature of this book is the consisting of Sinhala
adaptations of all the poetry which he has contributed to the leading
English newspapers. Hence, this book is of great importance for those
who take keen interest in pursuing English and Sinhala Literature as
well. Writer’s creative ability is splendidly brought out through this
book with numerous heart - throbbing usages and artful tricks to enhance
the beauty of feelings. It shows up very nicely through the expressions
in this poem.
“Various types of devils,
Rag, tag and Bobtails, and
Fathers of Various lineages
Made merry with me
At their will, to the tune of
Lustful songs... and
Filled my world of dreams
With fantastic promises
But no legacy came on my way
But you.......”
In this whole book these kind of expressions and adaptations can be
seen very vividly and meaningfully without harming the themes through
which he brings into limelight his talents very excellently even as a
mature writer.
One of his short stories included in this book called “a Sigh of
Relief” brings up many implications and passionate sentiments as that of
a standard of an accomplished writer. As a whole, Sudath Jayatissa
Hewamaddhuma has been able to dive in to the depth of soft corners of
society and bring the reality out very fascinatingly.
By the poem “A scent of an affection” the writer has displayed very
nicely, the expectations and filial love of a wife towards her husband
in this manner...
May your figure be emerged on the foam of rolling waves
May your scent be felt on whirling wind
May your attractive smile be seen in and around my eyes
May my mind be filled with pride, whenever I remember you.
A wife, whose heart is filled with inexplicable lovely whims and
fancies is overflowing with pride of her husband. The writer has been
able to show his talents through this kind of marvellous expressions in
both English and Sinhala languages.
I feel in an age where good ethics, taste of literature, traditions
and religion are in the rapid march of degeneration, every one who take
keen interest to enrich their taste, knowledge and understanding, should
read this book.
