Nadeera Jayasekera clinches Gold with a record breaking swim
Nadeera Jayasekera of Visakha Vidyalaya won the gold medal in the 100
metres Breast Stroke event under 14 category breaking a 23 year old
record held by the swimming legend Deepika Chanmugam at the recently
concluded National Age Group Aquatic Championships.
Nadeera clocked 1 mt. 23.59 secs. setting a new record in this event
beating 1 mt. 24.61 secs. which was established in 1985 by Deepika
Chanmugam. Nadeera was closely followed by Andrea Jelenik of British
School who also did well to swim better than the record. Nadeera also
broke tbe 50 metres Breast Stroke under 14 record by clocking 39.11 sec.
to beat the record at 39.20 which was established by Gihara
Amarasinghe last year but had to settle for the silver medal with Lihini
Tashia Dias of Andiambalama Safety Swimming Club winning the Gold medal
with a time of 39.06 secs.
