Solicitor General Priyasath Dep was appointed as Acting Attorney
General consequent to the retirement of former Attorney General
President’s Counsel C. R. de Silva by the President Mahinda Rajapaksa
with effect from October 8, 2008.
The Acting Attorney General Priyasath Dep was sworn in before the
Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva PC on October 9, 2008.
Priyasath Dep had his primary and secondary education at St. Joseph’s
College, Colombo. At school Priyasath excelled in studies and sports. He
represented his College in athletics, rugger and soccer.
Dep was enroled as an Attorney-at-Law in October 1976 and joined the
Attorney General’s Department in January 1978 as a State Counsel, later
he was promoted as a Senior State Counsel.
He was appointed as Solicitor General on April 7, 2007. He had led
the prosecution team in number of important cases in the country
including the Sevwandi Murder case before a Trail-At-Bar, Customs Deputy
Director Amarappala murder case and Custom Officer Sujith Prasanna
Perera murder case.
He was engaged in conducting prosecutions under the Prevention of
Terrorism Act (PTA) and also conducted prosecutions in number of
Narcotics cases.
