UNP calls for probe
Uditha Kumarasinghe, Irangika Range and Sandasen

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe making a special statement
yesterday in Parliament requested the acquisition of the service of a
reputed foreign Police Investigation Institution to investigate the
suicide attack that assassinated the Opposition Leader of the North
Central Provincial Council Major General Janaka Perera and many others.
Gen. Janaka Perera was dedicated to save the country from terrorism
and faced many battles as a valiant soldier. Gen. Perera initiated many
novel changes into the Forces.
He attacked only terrorists. He never attacked a particular ethnic
group. He protected human rights during war.
He freed the East from the LTTE. Even after his retirement he was
dedicated to help War Heroes. Based on these we requested to appoint
Janaka Perera to the post of Defence Secretary.
He entered politics on my personal and the UNP's request. He was
exposed to LTTE threats. But the Government did not dare to provide him
with necessary security.
The Court ordered that he be provided with eight security personnel.
He always stood for the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of
the country. He also condemned terrorism of the LTTE and was against
child conscription by the LTTE.
Proper security was not provided to Gen. Janaka Perera even after he
was appointed as the Opposition Leader of the North Central Provincial
Council. He made a complaint on September 19 of threats to his life at
the Anuradhapura ASP's office.
The Police statement that they were not informed of the opening
ceremony of UNP district office was not true. The Police was informed of
this ceremony although the necessary security was not given.
Few days ago, a search was conducted in Anuradhapura. Why was this
suicide attacker not apprehended? Based on these grounds we cannot
expect an impartial investigation from the Police. Hence we request the
acquisition of the service of a foreign Police Investigation Institution
to investigate this incident.
The Government should take the responsibility of this incident.
