Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka yesterday expressed the
Government's deep shock and grief over the killing of the North Central
Provincial Council Opposition Leader Major General Janaka Perera and
several others in a brutal LTTE suicide bomb attack in Anuradhapura on
Monday.
Premier before commencing the Emergency debate said whatever
political differences they have, Gen. Janaka Perera was a valiant War
Hero who has made a lot of sacrifices to safeguard the country.
"The Government does not condone this killing. The Government
vehemently condemns this brutal assassination. He was a true gentlemen
and a valiant War Hero who has made a lot of contribution to the Army."
The intention of the LTTE terrorists is to assassinate prominent War
Heroes, politicians and innocent civilians. Therefore the Government has
launched military operations against the terrorists, the Prime Minister
said.
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said the Co-ordinating
Secretary of the North Central Provincial Council Opposition Leader has
requested the Police to provide security to the function which was
scheduled to be attended by Major General Janaka Perera in Anuradhapura
on Monday.
The Opposition Leader also handed over a copy of that letter to the
Prime Minister.
Premier responding to the Opposition Leader said as he just received
