Train collision: Full scale investigation launched

Colombo: A full scale investigation has been commenced by the Railway
Department to probe the train collision at Ganemulla. A Polgahawela
bound train collided with the Kandy bound intercity train at the
Ganemulla station killing one person and injuring 25 others on Monday.
Following the directions of Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma,
Railways General Manager Dr.Lalithasiri Gunaruwan has appointed a Major
Board to look into the matter.
Dr. Gunaruwan told the Daily News that the preliminary inquiry was
conducted by questioning the related parties. The nearest reason and the
responsible parties would be found through the report
which is due to be submitted today to the GM. He said that drivers of
the two trains have temporarily removed from their turns until the
report of the preliminary inquiry was over. Following the report, we
will take action against the responsible parties.
He said that the compensation for the affected families will be
provided. Modalities are being worked out by the Railway officials in
this regard. The main railway line has been mobilised and normal train
operations have been restored swiftly. |
