Train collision: Full scale investigation launched

Colombo: A full scale investigation has been commenced by the Railway Department to probe the train collision at Ganemulla. A Polgahawela bound train collided with the Kandy bound intercity train at the Ganemulla station killing one person and injuring 25 others on Monday.

Following the directions of Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma, Railways General Manager Dr.Lalithasiri Gunaruwan has appointed a Major Board to look into the matter.

Dr. Gunaruwan told the Daily News that the preliminary inquiry was conducted by questioning the related parties. The nearest reason and the responsible parties would be found through the report

which is due to be submitted today to the GM. He said that drivers of the two trains have temporarily removed from their turns until the report of the preliminary inquiry was over. Following the report, we will take action against the responsible parties.

He said that the compensation for the affected families will be provided. Modalities are being worked out by the Railway officials in this regard. The main railway line has been mobilised and normal train operations have been restored swiftly.
