Wesley clinch under 16 Cup Championship

Wesley College won the Cup Championship while Isipathana College won the Plate Championship and Mahanama College the Bowul title at the all island under 16 schools division one Ten-a-Side Rugby Tournament organised by Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association and sponsored by Nestle Lanka (Pvt) Limited and concluded at the Nittawela Stadium in Kandy yesterday.

Wesley College completely outplayed Royal College in the Cup finals by defeating them by 24 points (2 goals, 2 tries) to 7 (1 goal) after leading 17-0 at lemons.

Match winner for the Wesleyites was winger Pathum Peiris who scored a hat-trick of tries in the first half to completely baffle the Royalists from which they never recovered. One of these tries was converted by fly half Dulaj Perera.

One more try in the second half by fly half Dulaj Perera which was converted by winger Pathum Peiris ensured victory for the Wesleyites. It was in the dying stages of the game that the Royalists were able to reduce the lead through a try by winger Ishan Jayakody with fly half Arshad Jamaldeen adding the extra points. It was the combination of Dulaj Perera and Pathum Peiris which knocked the daylights out of the Royalists.

In the plate finals Isipathana College beat St. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia by 12 points (1 goal, 1 try) to 7 (1 goal) after leading 7-0 at half time.

In the Bowl Finals Mahanama College defeated Carey College by 12 points (1 goal, 1 try) to nil after they led 5-0 at lemons. Doing the honours at the awards ceremony were D.K. Punyadasa, Rohitha Indunil and Bandula Egodage of Nestle Lanka Limited.

Cup quarter finals

Wesley College beat Vidyartha College 28-0, Piliyandala Central College beat St. Sylvester’s College 5-0, Royal College beat St. Anthony’s College 10-0, Trinity College beat Dharmaraja College 5-0.

Cup semi-finals

Wesley College beat Piliyandala Central College 14-0, Royal College beat Trinity College 12-7.

Cup finals

Wesley College beat Royal College by 24 points (2 goals, 2 tries) to 7 (1 goal).

Plate quarter finals

Isipathana College beat St. Peter’s College 16-0, Thurstan College beat St. Thomas’ Prep School 10-5, C.W.W. Kannangara National School beat Science College 6-0, St. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia beat D.S. Senanayake College 12-0.

Plate semi finals

Isipathana College beat Thurstan College 15-0, St. Thomas College beat C.W.W. Kannangara National School 5-0.

Plate finals

Isipathana beat St. Thomas’ 12-7.

Bowl quarter finals

St. John’s Nugegoda beat St. Benedict’s 17-0, St. Joseph’s beat Prince of Wales 31-0, Mahanama beat St. Aloysius 34-0, Carey received bye.

Bowl semi finals

Carey beat St. John’s 5-0, Mahanama beat St. Joseph’s 7-5.

Bowl finals

Mahanama beat Carey 12-0.
