Presidential approval will be sought to declare 2009 as the year of English and Information Technology, Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister Karu Jayasuriya said.

Speaking at the 7 th Annual General Meeting of the State Computer Service held at Mahaweli Centre recently the Minister said he was well aware about the advantages of computers during his 35 year career in the private sector.

Hailing the progress recorded under the direction of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Minister Jayasuriya said that the service of the Divisional Secretariat has been expanded.

Minister Jayasuriya said that there are 116,000 Sri Lankans employed abroad, but only 15,000 are in clerical and parallel grades. This amount could be increased if the computer skills of clerks are enhanced . The Government's aim is to create 100,000 jobs in the IT sector by the year 2012.
