Tambuttegama Magistrate Prasanna Alwis ordered a pavement hawker at
Adhiramigama to pay Rs. 5,000 as fines when he pleaded guilty on a
charge of selling a food article which contained a harmful substance
near a school. This food item was very popular among students as it was
very cheap.
Public Health Inspector Ihalawewa of the Talawa MOH office L.L.
Suranga Lankajeewa and a team seized the food item on a complaint and
samples were sent to the Government Analyst. The analyst's report said
the item contained Rodomine B, a prohibited colouring which is cancerous
and thus unsuitable for human consumption.
