Man who sold cancerous food to students fined

Tambuttegama Magistrate Prasanna Alwis ordered a pavement hawker at Adhiramigama to pay Rs. 5,000 as fines when he pleaded guilty on a charge of selling a food article which contained a harmful substance near a school. This food item was very popular among students as it was very cheap.

Public Health Inspector Ihalawewa of the Talawa MOH office L.L. Suranga Lankajeewa and a team seized the food item on a complaint and samples were sent to the Government Analyst. The analyst's report said the item contained Rodomine B, a prohibited colouring which is cancerous and thus unsuitable for human consumption.

The magistrate ordered the accused to pay State costs under the case number 80359 filed by the Public Health Inspector.
