Colombo Deaf A clinch SLDCA Champions Trophy

Colombo Deaf Team A captained by Sumudu Lanka showed their class at the All Island Deaf six-a-side softball cricket tournament by beating the Anuradhapura Deaf Team A, which was held at the S. de S. Jayasinghe grounds recently.

Many deaf participants in Sri Lanka took part in this tournament, which was organised by the Sri Lanka Deaf Cricket Association.

Shivantha Vivekanandan, President Sri Lanka Deaf Cricket Association, stated that the SLDCA was founded in 1995 by Mrs. K. D. Anula Ranjani, to uplift the game of leatherball cricket in Sri Lanka with the help of the active parents and the friends of deaf cricketers.

The efforts of SLDCA have paid off since 2000, its players play in Division III cricket conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket.

The Sri Lanka Deaf Cricket Team took part in the 1st Deaf Cricket World Cup in 1995/1996 in Australia and the 2nd Deaf Cricket World Cup in 2005, India.

The Sri Lanka Deaf Cricket Team also participated in the 1st Deaf Cricket Asia Cup and also 3 ODI Cricket Deaf Team in Sri Lanka between Sri Lanka Deaf Cricket Team and Pakistan Deaf Cricket Team in 2007 at the De Soysa Stadium, Moratuwa.

He also stated that the deaf cricketers are requested to join the Sri Lanka Deaf Cricket Association to play the leatherball cricket matches.

Kesarralal Gunasekera, Leader of Opposition, Dehiwela-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council was the chief guest while V. Weerasena, Vice President, Sri Lanka Central Federation of the Deaf was the Guest of Honour.

They gave the awards. Sumudu Lanka and Lakshan Fernando, both from Colombo Deaf Team A won the Best Batsman and Best Bowler Awards while Ananda from Anuradhapura Deaf Team A received the man of the series award.
