PC mechanism perfect system to devolve administrative power - Prime Minister

Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka yesterday asserted that the Provincial Council mechanism introduced initially to resolve the ethnic issue in the North and East was a perfect system to devolve administrative power to the people of all provinces.

The Premier made this assertion when he addressed a ceremony following the inauguration of the new Provincial Council building complex in Galle yesterday.

He pointed out that unfortunately, the system was rejected by the LTTE in the North and East, the region which needed it most.

It was implemented in the other seven provinces, and now in eight. Very soon, it would be extended to nine, following the liberation of the North shortly.

He said to obtain optimum results and benefits of the Provincial Council mechanism, there should be perfect unity and co-existence within the council.

SPC Chairman I. Wijewantha, Opposition Leader Justin Gallappathy, Chief Minister Shan Wijelal de Silva and Governor Kumari Balasuriya also spoke.
