Government to enter LP Gas market

Colombo: Petroleum and Petroleum Resources Minister A.H.M. Fowzie yesterday disclosed that the Government will enter the gas market by December with a stock 50 mt at first.

A 12.5kg of domestic cylinder will cost Rs.500 less than current rate of the market. Addressing in the Weekly Cabinet Briefing, the Minister said that the initial steps have already been taken to carry out this project. “We are in the process of calling tenders to purchase cylinders,” the Minister added. The gas prices in the world market are always fluctuating and the burden of this price hike has to be borne up by consumers.

“This will be a great alternative solution to reduce the burden of consumers who face great difficulties once the gas prices go up in the world market.” “The Government is committed to provide maximum relief to people and with the entry of this locally manufactured gas to the market, consumers will be provided by gas at a concessionary rates,” the Minister said.
