Book launch on Monday
The investigative volume Dhos Nethi Vas Nethi Koss written by Deputy
Editor of Silumina Nihal P Abeysinghe ANCL weekly will be launched on
September 8 at 3.00 p.m. at National Library and Documentation Centre,
Independent Avenue, Colombo 7.
Colombo University Vice Chancellor Kshanika Hirimburegama, Colombo
University Environment Science Department Professor Sarath Kotagama,
Lake House Chairman Bandula Padmakumara, 'Kalakeerthi' Rohana Pradheepa
Edwin Ariyadasa, Vetaran Journalist Sunil Sarath Perera and several
other distinguished invitees will take part in the launch event.
Mediation programme
A meditation programme will be held at the Yamuna Sadaham Aramaya,
Maya Avenue, Colombo 6.
Ven. Olande Ananda Thera will conduct the meditation programme on
Monday at 6.00 p.m. Bogoda Premaratne on Wednesday at 5.00 p.m. and Ven.
Diyatalawe Piyadassi Thera on Saturday at 5.00 p.m.
Heart of Silence launch
Heart of Silence, a selection of English poetry written by journalist
and critic Elmo Fernando, will be launched on September 7 at 4.00 p.m.
at the Kalutara Children's Library auditorium.
Literati G.A. Matupema will review the book and recite some of its
poems. Journalist Siri Abeysekara will talk on 'Elmo and his Society'.
The event is organised by '3-G Literary Movement' in Kalutara.
Yoga Bhavana workshop
The Yoga Bhavana workshop organised annually by the Maharagama
Sethsanda Yoga Nikethanaya will be held on September 7 from 9.00 am to
6.00 pm at the National Youth Services Council, Maharagama.
The event which will unveil ancient Indian formulae for a healthy
mind and body expects the participation of around 1,500 guests.
The organisation will provide breakfast, lunch and evening tea to all
participants.

Convenor Charmin Warnakula will also launch his book Yoga and Vishva
Shakthi
Islamic lectures
Scholar Moulana Fazil Farook will deliver a lecture on How to
Beautify the Month of Ramazan on September 14 at 10.30 a.m. at the Nimal
Road Jummah Masjid, Bambalapitiya.
These lectures will continue every Poya Day in English by Islamic
scholars mainly catering to English speaking Muslims in Sri Lanka, under
the guidance of Darul Uloomil Islamiyya, which conducts Alim Course in
English.
Awareness programme
The Justice and Law Reform Ministry will conduct a one-day awareness
programme for Inquirers of Sudden Deaths at the Ministry of Justice and
Law Reform on September 6.
Justice and Law Reform Minister Amarasiri Dodangoda and Deputy
Minister V. Puthrasigamani will be the chief guests. Justice and Law
Reform Ministry Secretary Suhada Gamlath is organising this programme.
Prof. Ravindra Fernando, Professor of Forensic Medicine and
Toxicology and Chief District Judge Sisira K Ratnayake will deliver the
lectures.
Book launch
The book Abimanawath Tharunya authored by Pasitha de Silva, a member
of the Tharunayata Hetak organisation will be launched at Richmond
College, Galle tommorow under the patronage of Tharuyata Hetak
organisation President Namal Rajapaska.
Writer Gamini Kumara Vitharana will delver a special lecture.

The book Alokayata Yata Hamuvima (Meeting Under the Lights) authored
by journalist and actor Gamini Jayalath will be launched at 3 p.m. today
at the Public Library Auditorium, Colombo.
Jackson Anthony and Jayanatha Chandrasiri will deliver special
lectures.
The book is published by Sandakada Publishers, Rajagiriya.
Plane carrying Sonia makes emergency landing
A jet carrying India’s ruling Congress party chief, Sonia Gandhi and
the Finance Minister made an emergency landing because of a technical
problem.
Ms Gandhi and Finance Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram were flying
from New Delhi to the southern city of Coimbatore but the private jet
had to touch down in Bangalore, 250 kilometres short of its destination.
Senior Congress party official Mallikarjun Kharge said the plane had
made a safe landing. But gave no details of the nature of the technical
problem.

The past pupils’ day of Ananda Shasthralaya, Kotte will be held at
school on September 6.
Walk to highlight food crisis
Walk and Feed to raise awareness of the global food crisis, organised
by the Muslim Aid Sri Lanka (MASL), in association with the World Health
Organisation, AmeriCares, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)
and the Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies will be held on September 14
at 4 pm at the Viharamahadevi Open Air Theatre.
Academic programmes
The first year academic programmes for students admitted to the
Faculty of Science, University of Jaffna based on the GCE (A/L)
Examination 2007 will commence on September 24.
New students are requested to participate in the orientation
programme that will be conducted on September 24 at 9 am.
Rs 10 m to purchase paddy
Rs. 10 million has been allocated to the Kandy district to purchase
paddy during the Yala season, the Agriculture and Agrarian Services
Ministry said funds have been released to Corporative Societies charged
with the task of purchasing paddy from farmers.
Private traders have already commenced purchasing paddy.
