Third school term begins

The third term of Government schools will commence today. The school term is scheduled to continue until December 11.

Due to the Advanced Level Examination which had been held until yesterday the school commencement has come to the middle of the week, an Education Ministry spokesman said.


No shortage of coins

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) informs the public that there is no shortage of coins in circulation as reported in a weekend newspaper.

Any bank which wishes to obtain additional coins is free to do so at anytime, the release said.


Most wanted man shot dead

Police yesterday acting in self-defence shot dead a most wanted underworld member at Gasworks junction.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said M. Irfan, 30 was arrested by Fort Police for committing 18 crimes including murder. “Irfan was one of the most wanted underworld gangsters and had committed many crimes in Colombo and suburbs,” he added.

Following interrogation, Fort Police accompanied Irfan to recover weapons used for the crimes from his hide outs at around 4.50 a.m. “When the police jeep was nearing towards Gaswork junction, Irfan had grabbed a gun from a police constable and at tempted to shot at the police personnel inside the vehicle. Acting on self-defence police shot dead Irfan,” SSP Gunasekera told the Daily News.

Meanwhile, a retired Government servant was killed by an unidentified man on Tuesday at his residence in Kiribathgoda.

Amarasiri Nanayakkara, 78 had been living alone with his aide in a housing scheme in Kiribathgoda. “When a friend of Nanayakkara visited his residence at around 6.10 p.m. Nanayakkara was found dead lying on the floor with heavy bleeding from his head,” SSP Gunasekera said.

“We suspect that Nanayakkara was attacked with a sharp tool or a weapon causing head injuries and died due to heavy bleeding,” he added.

SSP Gunasekera said the incident had occurred between 8.30 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. and his aide was not at home when the incident took place.

Kiribathgoda police are investigating.


Jets destroy LTTE FAC

Air Force fighter jets carried out an air raid targeting an LTTE boat movement in Alampil, Mullaitivu yesterday morning. An LTTE fast attack craft was destroyed and another partly damaged in the raid.

Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said Air Force fighters destroyed an LTTE fast attack craft anchored at the Alampil beach while another partly damaged at around 10.30 am.

He said the air raid was effective and completely destroyed the boat causing heavy damages. The air attack was carried out following ground intelligence information and air surveillance.
