Maiden Arangetram

Nine-year-old Tharushi Manodya's maiden arangetram will be held on September 6 at 6 am at the Kurunegala New Provincial Council auditorium under the patronage of veteran cinema director Somaratne Dissanayake. She is the 56th student of well-known dancing teacher Natya Bhushana Sri Jayantha Kumara Karunasekara. A student of Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya, Tharushi is the daughter of Thilakasiri Senarath Dayananda and Sriyani Mangalika.


Church feast

The annual feast of St. Lazarus Church, Kurukulawa will be celebrated on Sunday, September 7 at 8.30 am.

The chief celebrant is Rev. Fr. Prageeth Dilshan. Vespers will be sung on Saturday at 7.30 pm under the patronage of Rev. Fr. Ruwandana Mendis. Procession at 5.30 pm on Sunday conducted by the Parish priest Rev. Fr. Prasad Ponnamperuma.


Mentally retarded girl raped by father

The Special Investigation Unit of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has taken into custody a 38-year-old father who had raped his 12-year-old daughter over a period of time, an NCPA spokesman said.

He said that the girl was suffering form a mental illness.

The girl herself informed about the incident to the NCPA. Although the girl's relatives complained about the incident to the Kalpitiya Police on several occasions no action had been taken. She was continuously raped by her father.

The suspect was produced before the Kurunegala Additional Magistrate and remanded till September 12. The girl was also produced before Judicial Medical

Officer.


Randoli MahaPerahera fromSeptember 5-9

The annual Esala Perahera of Hanguranketha commenced on August 31. Accordingly the internal perahera of the Sri Vishnu Devala, Aluthnuwara devala and Pattini devala will parade from August 31 to September 4.

The Randoli Maha Perahera will parade from September 5-9.

The water cutting ceremony will take place at 6.22 a.m. auspicious time on 15 of September at Ma-oyatota of Hanguranketha. Thereafter the perahera will visit from Ma-oyatota to Hanguranketha Maha Maluwa and the perahera will parade three times around the Maha Maluwa.

Thereafter the perahera will get into the home on September 15 at 7.10 auspicious time according to ancient customs.

The Hanguranketha police is implementing a special security programme for the devotees who visit to see the perahera. The CTB depot of Hanguranketha is operating a special bus service.


Carcass of elephant found

A carcass of an elephant was reported to be found at Opalgala in the Naula Police area.

The Police believe the elephant ought to have died a few days earlier. Bleeding and vomiting of blood has been noted by the police.

The Police have come to a conclusion of the animal being poisoned by adding some insecticide into a pumpkin.

Officials of the wildlife too assisted the police in the inquiries.


Ukuwela PS topping list - Chairman

Ukuwela Pradeshiya Sabha is found to be topping the list of PSs in the Matale District reaping the full benefits of the ‘Mahinda Chintana’. The recent highlight of its rural road development programme for which the PS has got a loan of Rs. 800 lakhs, said the Chairman of Ukuwela Pradeshiya Sabha Samantha Dharmasena.

He said 60 per cent of the loan has been granted as an aid and they required to pay the balance 40 per cent.

Rural roads in Ukuwela area are in a dilapidated condition. The public suffer a lot of hardship. In spite of hardships we involve I have decided to help the public in the areas of Guralawela - Kirimetiayawa - Ukuwela - Mahatenna - Wehigala - Irriyagolla - Kohobiliwela - Katudeniya - Watagoda - Galauda - Pallakubura - Wattegedara - Wademada - Red banagama - Dehipitiya - Alawatuwela.

Development cannot be handled single handed. It would be more meaningful if we get the public support the Chairman said.
