Men’s double final today

93rd National Tennis Championship:

The twelve-day old 93rd National Tennis Championships, sponsored by Laugfs Gas and conducted by the SLTA on its Greenpath Courts, will be brought to a close this evening with the Mens’ Double final between Harshana Godamanne / Rajeev Rajapakse versus Rukmal Cooray / Sankha Athukorala. This will be followed by the presentation of awards at which the Minister of Sport Gamini Lokuge will be the chief guest.

Right upto yesterday there were far reaching wide array of events to include wheel chair tennis, the children boys and girls, the Juniors, the intermediate and senior categories.

This does speak well of the organisers, who were able to keep well within the schedule of matches.

Those who impressed amongst the men were Sankha Athukorala, Rajeev Rajapakse, Gayanga Weerasekera, Amrith Rupasinghe, Godamanne, Rukmal Cooray and Dinusha Wijesuriya.

The pick amongst the women were Jithmie Jayawickrema, Amritha Muttiah, Udanthi Narahenpitage, Nilupul Goonesekera, Khemali Herath, Shahini Silva and Shenali Weerasekera. In the evening of the penultimate day, Rajeev Rajapakse / Jithmie Jayawickrema beat Dinusha Wijesuriya / Nilupul Gooneskera to win the mixed doubles finals 6/1, 6/4. Both Rajeev and Jithmie displayed fine court craft and better placement to make short work of the first set in the next they countered.

Opposition from Wijesuriya and Nilupul to impress on the rallies to secure 4 points before going down.

In the women’s doubles, Shalini de Silva and Amritha Muttiaha, wasn’t given a fight by Udanthi Narhenpitage / Shenali Weerasekera to win comfortably 6/2, 6/2.
