Arms and explosives found in Ampara

The police Special Task Force (STF) recovered arms and explosives including a claymore mine weighing 10.8 kg dumped in a jungle patch along Damana road in Ampara yesterday morning.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said police on public information found the arms and explosives at 55th Milepost in Damana road, Ampara at around 10.00 a.m.

“The arms and explosives were packed in a sack and dumped behind a tree in a jungle patch.” The STF found a claymore mine weighing 10.8 kg, a T56 assault rifle, a T56 magazine with 29 rounds, four detonators and black tape in the sack.


Special TV programme

A special programme featuring senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa will be telecast over Rupavahini and ITN on August 17, at 9.00 p.m.

The programme yesterday, today and tomorrow’, will discuss issues relating to disarmament, development and democracy.

Vegetable vendor, three injured in grenade attack

A vegetable vendor and three others were critically injured when two unidentified men on a motorcycle attacked the vendor’s vegetable stall at 97 mile post on the Embilipitiya - Ratnapura main route with a hand grenade on Wednesday night.

The injured are receiving treatment at the Embilipitiya Base Hospital.

The grenade attack had taken place following a personal issue, police said.


Islamic Day, prize-giving

The Islamic Day and prize-giving of Al Nasser Ahadiyyah School, Grandpass, Colombo 14 will be held today at 5.00 p.m. at the Tower Hall, Maradana.
