Northampton bouncer thrown out of UK for being illegal immigrant

A bouncer working illegally at a Northampton nightclub has been thrown out of the country and sent back to Sri Lanka after he tried to sneak back into the UK.

The unnamed doorman was given a taste of his own medicine when immigration officers at Heathrow Airport told him he was not allowed to come back into the UK.

The Sri Lankan had worked for a nightclub in Northampton before returning to his native country for a short time.

But knowing he did not have a permit to come back to Britain, the illegal immigrant pretended to be a science student who was returning to continue his studies at a London college.

Although his bags contained college certificates and information about his non-existent course, the immigration officials who arrested him at the airport last week said the bouncer was unable to answer basic questions and "his cunning plan quickly unravelled".

Despite just getting off a long-haul flight, he was put on the next plane back to Sri Lanka after finally admitting he had not attended any classes and had, in fact, been employed full-time in Northampton without a National Insurance number or permission to work within the UK or the European Union.

UK Border Agency officials are now investigating whether the college in question is legitimate or whether it should be struck off the official register.

A UK Border Agency spokesman said: "We will not tolerate people getting jobs in the UK via the back door.

"Foreign nationals who want to find employment here full-time have to apply for a work and not a student visa. "Under the new points-based system, which we're rolling out at the moment, employers face big fines for employing illegal immigrants.

"Colleges will also be expected to alert the UK Border Agency when foreign students fail to show up for classes. Compulsory ID cards for foreign students are also being introduced later this year."
