MATATRA: A clash between Arts and Science Faculty students of
the Ruhunu University last morning injured 11 students, two of them
critically, police said.
Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said 11 students were injured
and eight were arrested following the clash between the First Year Arts
Faculty and Science Faculty students of the Ruhunu University. “The
injured were admitted to the Matara Hospital.
“Initial investigations revealed that the clash erupted following a
particular student union rejecting to join a group of first year
students from the Arts Faculty,” SSP Gunasekera told the Daily News.
Matara police are investigating. Meanwhile, a protest march by
unemployed graduates was held from Colombo Fort to the Ceramic junction
yesterday noon.
SSP Gunasekera said when the protesters attempted to breach the
police block and march towards the Old Parliament building they were
stopped.
“The protesters left the scene when the Police Riot team stopped them
from entering the High Security Zone,” he added. |
