Book review:
Bombs and Ombs II
Bandula SENEWIRATNE
All of us would be glad to hear of the inner working of the Police
Department. This slim volume gives us all such material in quite a
readable manner. What is more significant is that if comes from the
horse’s mouth itself.
Bandula has joined the Police Department as a young sub-Inspector and
retired as a Superintendent of Police.
His work contains a lot of information on day to day affairs of his
Department which most of us are unaware of.
Presented mostly in the form of anecdotes, I am sure, it will serve
to bring about a closer understanding between its readers and the Sri
Lanka Police Force.
After all, that is what even the present IGP is declaredly aiming at.
To cite just one instance, DIG Gaffoor was a legend in his day itself
even before his departure from this world. Having joined the Police as
an SI, this renowned boxer, Gaffie is stated here to have been known as
‘the biggest police officer this side of the Suez’.
I have myself seen this ‘riot buster’ drinking half bottle of arrack
in one gulp and eating a half roasted chicken in one bite!
Bandula has been known to readers as a regular contributor to English
newspapers and this book contains some of such fascinating writings as
well.
This book, like his earlier ‘Bombs and Ombs I’, it should be said
finally, makes informative and interesting reading.
