Mother of Minister Karu Jayasuriya passes away

Wimalaseela Jayasuriya, mother of Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister Karu Jayasuriya passed away yesterday.

She was a mother of three and was at 99 years of age at the time of death.

The body lies at Mirigama Walawwa for the public to pay their last respects. Funeral takes place on Saturday (2) in Mirigama.


Claims denied

Power and Energy Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne has denied the claim by the Ceylon Electricity Board trade unions that the construction work of the 27 megawatt Moragolla Hydro electricity project was handed over to LECO, a private electricity company.

The Minister however reiterated that his Ministry is duly concerned with the acceleration of new electricity projects in view of the energy shortages.


Rs. 50m for National food drive

The World Food and Agriculture Organisation will provide Rs. 50 million in aid for the Api Wawamu - Rata Nagamu national food drive which is in need at storage facilities, equipment for research centres and training for research officers.


Ministry recruits 118 wildlife officers

The Environment and Natural Resources Ministry recruited 118 wildlife officers to ease the acute shortage of manpower in the Wildlife Department.

The Finance Ministry approved the recruitment of 411 wildlife officers.

The department has the responsibility of looking after 1.2 million hectares of wildlife reservations and fauna living in it.


Pubic lecture

Dr. Frnacesco Piani, President, European School of Alcohology and Ecological Psychiatry and Professor of Forensic Psychiatry, University of Udine, Italy will speak on ‘Social Ecological Approach to Alcohol-related and Mixed Problems’ under the auspices of the Sri Lanka National Association of Family Clubs on August 6th at 5.00 p.m. at the Dharmavijaya Foundation Auditorium, 380/7, Sarana Road, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7.

It will be chaired by Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage, Secretary, Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition.


Musical show

Gee-Ru, a musical show jointly organise by the Past Pupil Association of Ambalangoda Dharmasoka Vidyalaya and affiliated organisations will be held tomorrow from 3.00 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. at the Mudalindu S. Thomas Silva Memorial Auditorium, Dharmasoka Vidyalaya, Ambalangoda.

Victor Ratnayake, Sunil Edirisinghe, Deepaka Priyadarshani, Amarasiri Peiris, Nirosha Viraini and several others will participate.


Uroos Mubarak

The annual Kandhoori in memory of His Holiness Hazarath Al Kuthub-us-Sailan Seyyedina Ash Sheikh Usman Siddeeqi Ibnu Abdul Rahman Voliyullah will commence on August 11 at 5.30 p.m. with the hoisting of Flag. The recitals in honour of Saints will take place daily and the final celebration will be on August 23. Thalai Fathiha for ladies will be held on August 25.


Cattle sanctuary

The Sri Bodhiraja Foundation at Embilipitiya, under the direction of Ven. Omalpe Sobhita Thera, will open the first cattle sanctuary in Sri Lanka on August 3.

A special blessing ceremony for 80 cows will take place on August 3 at 9.30 a.m. at the Sri Bodhiraja Foundation at Hingura-ara Embilipitiya.

This project is an extension of the Foundation’s cattle release programme that has, to date, saved more than 1000 cows from the butchers’ knives.

Bodhiraja Cattle Sanctuary at Kovulara-Sevanagala will not only provide a natural and free environment for the cattle but also produce milk and other dairy products at low-cost to the families in the area.


Body found in pit

Police found an unidentified body of a man in a polythene bag dumped in a pit yesterday evening in Katana, Kochchikade.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said following information, police recovered the body of the man around 3.00pm at an abandoned pit in a privately owned land in Mukkama, Katana. “The body was dumped in the pit, packed in a black polythene bag and a weight has been on the body,” he added.
